The Vietnam UK Network represented by Chair, Warwick Morris, and Vice-Chairs Bao Ha Pham and Matt Jackson, joined the celebrations held at The Mandarin Oriental London – Hyde Park on Monday 26th September.

His Excellency Nguyen Hoang Long, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United Kingdom welcomed dignitaries and guests from across the UK-Vietnam politics, business, education, and cultural communities to an evening of traditional music, food and entertainment from Vietnam.

The formal proceedings commenced with a minute’s silence to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II followed by a rendition of both countries’ national anthems. Ambassador Long then delivered a wonderful speech recounting President Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of independence in 1945, and bringing it back to the present day, reiterated the importance of the UK-Vietnam relationship as we head into 2023 which marks the 50th anniversary of full diplomatic relations between our countries (as well as the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam UK Network).

Speaking at the ceremony Gillian Keegan, British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, expressed her belief that the Vietnam-UK comprehensive relationship will continue to grow in the next 50 years and affirmed that the UK always welcomes students and businesses from Vietnam. She also noted the importance of the recently announced partnership in energy transition as the UK and Vietnam increased cooperation on climate change, and that bilateral trade increased 11% since the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) was signed in 2020.
