Vietnam-UK Network Winter Drinks Reception

Arup’s wonderful new offices in Charlotte St played host to a seasonal gathering of members, supporters, and friends of the Network. Despite the arctic weather conditions prevalent in London at the time, and considerable competition from other events across the capital that evening, a very healthy crowd of around one hundred souls with Vietnam-UK links close to their hearts gathered to hear speeches and to network with one another. It was a fabulous occasion enjoyed by friends old and new!

The highlights of the evening included an entertaining and passionate account of his time as HM Ambassador to Vietnam by Gareth Ward; a message on behalf of Ambassador Long (who was otherwise engaged meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace) delivered by Deputy Head of Mission Dr To Minh Thu; and the Chairman’s Report (sadly to be his last as he retires from the role in March) from Warwick Morris during which he recounted key events involving the Network during a very busy 2022 as well as a future-gaze towards an even busier 2023 as the UK and Vietnam mark 50 years of full diplomatic relations, and the Network celebrates 10 years of supporting the bilateral relationship between our great nations.

The event also saw the Network issue a number of Certificates of Recognition to individuals who have made significant contributions to the success of the Network throughout 2022.

The list of recipients, in no particular order are:

Nguyen Thi Thu Le, former First Secretary and Private Secretary to the Ambassador at Vietnam’s London Embassy

Gareth Ward, former HM Ambassador to Vietnam

Paul Smith, co-founder and former Vice Chair VUKN

Carina Wu, Arup

Nick Lonsdale, NashTech

And…unbeknown to him beforehand…

Warwick Morris, co-founder and current Chair, VUKN

Once again, huge thanks to Arup for hosting this event and for their ongoing support to the Network. The Network also extends its thanks to Heather Wheeler MP, former Minister for Asia, and long-standing friend of Vietnam who rushed over following Parliamentary duties to join the committee for drinks after the event and show her support.

Forthcoming events:

Two special events to note for diaries: our 10th Anniversary Dinner in the House of Lords on 21 June, and a 10th Anniversary classical music Concert on 7 September (more details on how to register for these events will follow in due course).
